¿En qué consiste un método de cribado?
Se trata de un sistema rápido y sencillo que puede ser realizado a un gran
número de personas para detectar enfermedades antes que los pacientes
presenten signos o síntomas. Se conoce también por “screening”.
La intención del “screening” es identificar enfermedades de manera temprana
dentro de una comunidad. Esto permite la rápida gestión e intervención
para realizar tratamientos de manera precoz. Suelen ser métodos muy
sensibles aunque poco específicos, es decir, nos indican si existe
normalidad o no pero el diagnóstico definitivo debe hacerlo un
oftalmólogo mediante exploraciones convencionales.
¿Qué es una retinografía?
Se trata de una fotografía de la retina o fondo de ojo. Se realiza con cámaras que no requieren dilatar las pupilas.
¿Realizarse una retinografía supone algún riesgo?
No supone ningún riesgo ya que no es necesario instilar (poner) ningún colirio en el ojo ni ningún tipo de intervención.
¿Qué ventajas me aporta hacerme una retinografía?
Se pueden detectar importantes enfermedades de la retina de forma rápida, cómoda y sencilla.
¿Qué enfermedades se pueden evaluar con la retinografía?
La
realización de fotografías del fondo de ojo ha demostrado una alta
eficacia y eficiencia en la detección de la afectación de la retina por
la diabetes, o lo que es lo mismo: este sistema ya se utiliza en muchos
países para que los pacientes diabéticos se diagnostiquen antes y se
puedan tratar mejor. También existen evidencias científicas en el
cribado de enfermedades como la degeneración macular asociada a la edad,
otras enfermedades vasculares y alteraciones del nervio óptico
secundario a glaucoma.
El uso de retinografías
no reemplaza una visita convencional por un oftalmólogo y no detecta
otras enfermedades oculares como el glaucoma, la catarata, las
alteraciones de la cornea, los desgarros de la retina y otras
enfermedades de la periferia retiniana.
¿Cómo sabré los resultados? ¿Tendré un informe médico?
Si,
una vez valoradas las imágenes un oftalmólogo experto en retina emitirá
un informe con el resultado que le será entregado via email. En su
informe de cribado se le recomendará la actitud a seguir en caso de
encontrar cualquier anomalía.
